WFD: Seafood Miso Soup

seafood_miso_small

I have a kitchen!!!!! Well, almost. Pretty much. Good enough to cook with anyhow. The range is in, level, and hooked up to gas and power. Countertops are in, sink and faucet are in. What is left? A window to be replaced, the dishwasher and fridge still need to go in. We are rather looking forward to the fridge actually, right now we are kinda pikey with the old fridge in our dining room.

Merry Christmas!!!

OK, we are taking a much needed break. Time to sit back and enjoy the holiday season. We are spending some time down in sunny California with family, and just some time letting other people cook for us!

The good news is that by the time the Christmas season is over, my (opps, our..) kitchen will be in order, and I have to say it is looking brilliant. The countertops and rangehood go in this week, and they have nearly finished all the cabinetry. Photos when it is done.

Happy holidays everyone! I will be back blogging on the 29th.

Berkshire Pig Pork Belly Sandwich at Baguette Box

This was a true delight yesterday. I have been working rather hard of late to get a project out, and have been missing the family somewhat. Time for a day off I thought, and to spend it with the two D’s (Drake and Danika). Often when we are out and about all day Danika is rather kind and lets me pick the lunch spot. Choice can be limited when you have a rug rat with you (as mentioned in previous posts) - not because some places don’t like kids there at lunch time (most do), some places are too loud, too crowded, and service takes too long (Drake gets fidgety after a while). We often end up at Baguette Box in Capital Hill.

Portage Bay Cafe

So I find myself writing much more about restaurants I have visited recently, rather than the food I am cooking. No surprise there really, considering our current situation of no kitchen!

Anyhow, I think we have found a new Sunday tradition. We had lots of them before Drake was born. We would almost always go for a walk after dinner, if the weather was good. The route would take us around our neighborhood, looking at houses, chewing the fat about the day. Lazy Sunday brunches, early morning runs, walking down to the water. Tons of em. As anyone with a young child knows, the first thing that you loose is that ability to get up and go, to be spontaneous. Of course, you get rewarded for all of this. You get the most amazing time of your life. The last year (Drake is coming up to his first Birthday) has been the most incredible of my life. I have never been so happy, so tired, so amazed, (and in the first week, so out of my depth). Thankfully now Drake is really down to a daily routine, and it is much faster to get out the house. I remember the first time we planned to leave the house with Drake, and go out to lunch. It was to Essential Baking in Madison Valley, just a few blocks away from us. I swear it took us over an hour to get ready - anyone would think that we packed for an outing to the arctic. Of course, we had to stop for Dani to feed Drake, let him nap a bit, and so forth. But we got out. Now we just pick up Drake and run.

Cabinets and Range

CRW_1355_small

Finally!!! The base cabinets are in, and the range is in its rough place (still got to be hooked up). This is really what I have been waiting for - finally we can start to see what our kitchen is going to look like.

What is left to do:

Upper cabinets

Range Hood

Fridge, Dishwasher

Countertop install, sink, faucet

Cabinet adjustments (door and drawer adjustments)

Cabinet knobs etc

New kitchen window

Lighting

Sounds lengthy, and it is, but things are coming on!! yay!

It has been a while since I have done any cooking. The bad weather recently hasn’t exactly inspired me to don a big rain jacket and stand outside cooking. Dani and I are starting to get rather sick of take-out, and thankfully neighbors and family are living up to promises and offering us dinners, which is pretty handy :) But I miss cooking. No matter how basic, no matter how mundane (heck, making toast right now works for me!), I miss it. Thankfully I got to do a tiny bit the other night. We needed something super quick. It took Drake an age to get to sleep, so we were going to be eating well late.

Steelhead Diner

Danika, Drake and I were in downtown today doing a spot of much needed Christmas shopping. By that, I mean Danika was trying to find a sweater for her, and I wanted to look round City Kitchens! Our list of presents to get this year is huge - we heading to see some family for Christmas, and have to buy for a lot more people than usual - but somehow we always end up picking up a few things for ourselves. We aren’t selfish, just shopping for other people always yields stuff you find for yourself! Danika did find a sweater, but alas I didn’t find anything I really needed in City Kitchens. I am after some decent carbon steel pans to use on my new range when the bloody kitchen finally gets done! Aparently by the end of this week the drywall, floors, cabinets and appliances will be done in the kitchen. I don’t quite see how, but hey.
