Advertisments on Wrighfood

Hello everyone, this is a public service announcement.

So, I was trying to dream up a funny photograph for this one. Maybe me covered head to toe in newspaper ads, or even a fake ad with yours-truly. But no. That just looked somewhat silly, and not in a good way.

I was also thinking about not mentioning any of the changes that are happening with my lovely little blog – but that would seem kind of odd too.

Over the last couple of months I have been giving blog advertising some thought. I didn’t start this blog to make money, and I never intend it to be that way – I would of course like it be uber-successful and take over the world, but I don’t think that happens by having ad’s on my site.

What does happen however is the rise in food costs, and also some more than cheap hobbies (moldy pig bits). I have been looking at new and interesting content for my blog – more meat curing stuff, more videos, more tutorials. It all starts to rack up those green pieces of paper. I don’t want to cover my blog in ads to pay for the cost of all of that, but I don’t want my blog to stagnant and not naturally progress as I would like.

So, you might see a few more ads on my site for a while. I am working hard to make them not take over everything (I have got really used to seeing the foodbuzz ad in the sidebar), and have them cover a few simple costs for the site – like hosting, software, meat.

Yes, meat. Meat curing gets kinda pricey. Especially since I favor using local small farms for the raw ingredients. A batch of salami can run up to $60, and that starts hitting the bottom line.

What I am really trying to say here, is that if you see an advert that really pisses you off, I REALLY want to hear about it. Seriously. Email me immediately and let me know. Having interesting content and having fun with food is priority. If the ad thing works out shit, then lets ditch it, move on, and never talk about the whole thing again.

    My blog is my full-time income now so advertising never bothers me. I think the key is to design the site in a way that they don’t compete with the content, or train your users where to look for content, and I am very positive your readers don’t mind. I have many ads on my site but I have never once received any complaints from my reader, not once. I am really very lucky and blessed, and grateful for my readers. But sometimes, some ads are ugly so it does get irritating to me as I wanted to kill those ads.

    I find a lot of value from your food photographs. I find them very helpful and inspirational. I don’t mind ads as long as they are unobtrusive (popups and such).

    I don’t see anything wrong in you putting advertisement. Blogging is a lot of effort and specially food blog where you take your own food photos is pure hard work.

    There is absolutely no reason why we the readers should stop you from earning from your own blog.

    And as Chris pointed, there are tools for those who don’t want to see ads. So, all in all I think ads don’t bother me and I think you should keep them.

    In my opinion.

    I have been reading yr blog for very long and i love your writing & photography. I think most people don’t understand that food bloggers are human and have a bill to pay at the end of every month. Go for it, if having some extra advertisements can help to lessen the burden and making you more free to blog more regularly, i don’t see why any readers will object to it. All the best! :)

    Since you gave me great advice for photography equipment, how to take better shots etc. I feel that we should click on those ads and help you doing it. We want to keep you around for a long time. We all learn from each other in the food blogging world and we need to make sure that serious bloggers stay around. Food blogging is an expensive hobby.

    I’ve been a serious lurker around your blog for quite some time now and apologize for not commenting. Actually, it’s quite unlike me, but I had to this time. Lately I’ve seen a bit of a smug movement on the part of some food bloggers in posting a little sticker that claims their blog to be “add-free.” Although the ads I run don’t earn me much, they do pay for things like my annual hosting fees, and other related accounts, all of which I use to do my blogging. Your point is well made about the other costs of our chosen hobby. They can be quite extensive! So I’m with the others — this is your blog. In much the same way magazines advertise — and I don’t always like those ads — I focus on the content, and in your case, it’s excellent.

  12. Matt, you have great content and I enjoy your philosophy to making good food, respecting ingredients and simple yet beautiful approach to food photography. A few ads here and there will not stop me from coming back.
