Nope, that isn’t my noggin. I don’t have any nasty tumors (I don’t think so anyhow).. but I thought some people might actually find this entertaining/interesting though.
I got an email this week from a researcher at a University (that shall remain nameless..), asking me about my photography. I get emails from time to time from people asking if they can use my food shots for certain things, but never this..
The researchers I guess are doing some studies into how we react to apparently appetizing food. They want to use a photograph or two of mine, and show them to people that are in an MRI machine.. They then go ahead and measure brain responses to the images presented.
Sounds like pretty interesting stuff! The cool thing is that they are going to send me the results of the tests.
As a complete science geek, this made my week.
I guess if you had any doubts whatsoever about if your food looks delicious, that about cleared them up for you.
My tummy always growls when I browse your page, THATS for damn sure.

Apparently they wanted something that was very clear and easy to visually read. If you ask me though, you cannot beat scallops or pork belly!

I got a similar request not too long ago. A med student is doing a paper on cancer and wanted to use my banana leaf-wrapped grilled fish picture. She later sent me the paper, it was eye-opening to read.
Wow - as a science teacher - that would be a pretty cool experiment to be a part of! Your food does always look mouth-watering!

I’m with you on scallops and pork belly, but I guess either of those would conflict with those observing a kosher diet.
I’m surprised they chose the photo they did - I don’t know how many laypeople would recognize fiddleheads as food.

Heather: I totally agree about the fiddleheads. I cooked that for a small family gathering.. and I got comments like “what the hell are those?” and “I’m not eating that!”. I am always a little critical of my work, but that dish just looked a bit messy to me, but hey.
Love those fiddleheads, Matt. Can’t seem to find them here which is a shame. I kind of miss the sauteed ferns I used to eat as a kid.

How fun to be part of a project like that and get to see the results! It’s too bad you can’t send them the finished dishes as well and see the responses with the photograph and then with the real item.
