Photographs from the farm

A month ago now, or so, Danika and I trotted over to Seabreeze farm on Vashon Island for a day of photography, animals, and stepping in cow poop.

What was the purpose? Just some fun really – to get out, and to shoot some very interesting people, and as luck turns out – some rather interesting animals.

Just a word of warning to any readers who don’t like seeing the butchering of raw meat. Some photos further down this post show a lamb carcass being cut up.

Seabreeze is a local/sustainable/great animal husbandry farm that is really very diverse. Cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, cheese, milk, charcuterie, wine, stock – you name it, they either have it or will make it. They even have a small restaurant that they use to cook up their farm wares, and also a space there for doing custom butchering of meat.

All in all, a completely fascinating place to spend a day, especially with a camera.

What follows is just a few (well, a little more than that) of the thousand odd shots I took that day. You can see more of them on my Flickr site.

Absolutely Brilliant! These are excellent shots Matt…obviously you guys had some fun! I love that first shot of the cow poking its head around the tree! LOL!

  2. nina says:

Nothing gruesome about these beautiful pictures….just made me miss my childhood very much!!!

  3. Giff says:

great shots… off I go to your flickr set!

  4. Kairu says:

Not gruesome at all! Beautiful shots.

  5. Gorgeous. It’s a rare photographer whose work is excellent in so many different areas. Many are good at food, but bad a people. Good at people, bad at farms, food. You do it all and make it look so inviting and wonderful.

  6. Heather says:

Gorgeous photos, Matt. A sweet, doe-eyed Jersey cow is one of my favorite sights on a farm. Those handsome farmer guys look pretty sweet, too. ;)

  7. The photos convey so much more than I’d generally expect. Great job!

  8. Babe the Pig says:

Surely those are trotters I see? And perhaps some bacon?

  9. Helen says:

Loved the whole series Matt. Reminded me of quite a good holidays in the Alps! Thanks!

  10. Julie says:

Stunning! We are so pleased to have Sea Breeze at our farmers market.

I can imagine lots of dishes to make with those pig trotters.. actually i cooked some yesterday. Good stuff.

Gorgeous shots, Matt. Really incredible work!

  14. kitchenbeard says:

Beautiful. They really convey a pastoral sense of peace and I can almost smell the grass. Thanks.

  15. Simon says:

    Very nice pics!

  16. Hank says:

So foggy! We won’t get that kind of fog until Christmas. What did you pick up? Looks like a goat and some hog feet. Pretty photos!

  17. redmenace says:

Gorgeous photos. I love Vashon. Sometimes, I really consider moving there. Just a hop, skip, and a jump– but, really, a world away…..

  18. Just like Giff, off to the flikr set :-) What a gorgeous series of pictures.

  19. Brooke says:

Notice a trend here in the use of the word “gorgeous”. I think it’s obvious why.

Seriously, Matt, you really brought us with you on your trip to the farm with those incredible photos. You really captured the mood, the silence, the innocence of the cows, and the touching-the-roots-of-it-all attitude of the farmers. Absolutely (yep, that’s right) gorgeous.

  20. kcline says:

These photos are beautiful, anyone who finds them offensive just really misses the point completely.
    Nicely done

  21. Gorgeous! And how wonderful that you got such a misty morning. Just lovely.
