Kitchen Reno has started!!!!

kitchen.jpg

The kitchen you see there will never exist again. Yay!! A kinda strange feeling to be honest. I have only cooked in this kitchen for a year, but it really has been a huge part of our lives. All of the Wrightfood book and blog were created in here. Even the photos – they were taken on the counter you see just the other side of the fridge. We have really cooked some fantastic food in here, against the odds of the kitchen. This is also the place that I would somehow manage to get to at 2am in the morning, when I needed to warm a bottle of milk for Drake. I say somehow got to, because some nights I was so tired I couldn’t focus, yet still managed to get a pan of water going to gently warm a bottle – without burning myself!

As most readers know, there really is no such thing as a perfect kitchen. You use anything day in and day out, and you are going to find things that you just love, and things that really start to make you grumble.. Here is my list for this old kitchen:

 loves…

It is tiny. Yeah, I know that is really odd, but I like cooking in small kitchens. You don’t need a big kitchen to cook good food. The advantage here is that I don’t have to travel far to go from one area to another. I am at the stove, and I turn round and I am at my prep area, or the sink, or the fridge.

er.. that is about all I love with this kitchen.

hates…

the counters slope

the counters have a really annoying uplip on the front edge.

the range slopes, so any fat in the pan goes to one corner.

the fridge is ridiculously big, but has no space inside.

the range hood blower sounds like a jumbo jet.

the stove top is electric (but not the worst electric I have ever cooked on, and preferable to quite a lot of gas that I have cooked on!)

the window doesn’t open.

So the renovation is two days in – the photos below are after the first day. They have found some odd stuff already – some of the cabinets were actually sunken into the wall, oh, and a huge wasp’s nest in one of the walls. Nice.

So how are we cooking? Read the next entry :D

Boy does this look and sound familiar. We just gutted ours a couple months ago and thank goodness it is about 90 percent complete. It looks fabulous, just alot of finishing touches to go. We took alot of photos every step of the way, I’m looking to do a post on the process when completed.
I wish you all the best with yours, I’m sure you are going to love it when it is done.
