OK, I am crazy busy right now with my day job, but just wanted to say how much I am completely in love with summer in Seattle this year. The fresh local produce available at the markets right now is outstanding… outstanding!!!!
Take this for example. It has been done a million times. Tomatoes, fresh mozzarella and basil – and not forgetting lashings, yes lashings of the most awesome French sea salt you can find. Oh, and topping it off with the equally most awesome olive oil.
It doesn’t get better than this. It can’t. Oh, wait, yes it can. The perfect summer pork belly post I have to write (that I cooked this weekend) when I get a free second. I love pork belly. Mmmmmm. I have always struggled to make pork belly light enough for summer though.. This little concoction that I speak of however well and truly kept the pork belly light and crisp. Yay! perfect for pork belly every week!!!
But until then, cheers to the awesome farmers and producers that make farmers markets as great as they are. And of course also to everyone that has decided they want the best produce and want to support local farmers. It’s inspirational, it really is.

this looks great! i bought some heirloom tomatoes at the farmer’s market a while back and my bf asked me why i put a greenish tomato on his plate, i told him it was ripe and to eat it. he did and now won’t stop telling everyone about heirloom tomatoes…as if they don’t already know.
These are my favourite ingredients when making a summer salad. Delicious…I hope there was plenty of bread to dip into that fresh dressing.
I love tomatoes and love pork belly even more. That’s a great photo - I can’t wait to see the pork one!
Hey Matt, Such a classic dish, and looks super tasty! I think it might be time for lunch!
I’ve had too much meat this week, I need to get some salad. Pike Place Market is my destination today.
I love farmer’s market tomatoes too and your plate looks super yummy!….just wondering if they’ve gone up in price substantially by you. Here in NYC, I’ve spotted them at up to $6 per pound, but most are around $4.50-$4.75 per pound. I don’t remember it being so so expensive last year.
Hi Jessica. My food bill has gone up 30% the last 6 months, and with no changes in my buying habbits - I am if anything buying less expensive stuff.
The good thing though, I have noticed that the farmers market prices have gone up less than most grocery stores - possibly because of food miles? I could also be completely crazy of course!
The biggest increase I have seen has actually been in seafood - even the local stuff is a lot more expensive this year, especially salmon.
I’m tagging you for a music meme. See my blog for details. Like how I keep doing that to you? : )
Yum! When can I come over for dinner!!!!
“lashings” is an underused word. I was glad to see it here. It made me want to eat that tomato salad even more. And yes, the tomatoes/all produce has been especially lovely year
Brittany - Lashings just sounds indulgent doesn’t it? Lashings should be used for the following: whipped cream, butter, sea salt, tip top olive oil. Oh, and wine.
This looks gorgeous! I love heading out to the farmer’s markets too! As usual, stunning photography. Love your blog.

I am 100% with you and now I feel lucky to know that $2 for a pound of local tomatoes is a steal. I only got two big ones on my plant this year, enough for a salad and a pizza!! The salad looks fantastic!
Yeah, dishes like these are made a million times because there is a great reason for it…..when you have kick ass tomatoes, just the simplest of ingredients just highlight the dish and make it a million bucks! Just looking at your pic is a worth a million $$$. A friend gave us some very pricey French fleur de sel the other day. I’m been saving it for a special occasion, but looking at your tomatoes has me yearning to check out my tomatoes plants now to see if any are ripe and tossing them with the fleur de sel. You’ve given me the summer cravings again.
Can’t wait to see your pork belly post! We’ve got plenty of pork belly recipes to share one day too, if we ever get around to writing about it!
Tartelette - $2/lb for local tomatoes is a complete steal. Take pictures of the pizza!
WoRC - Salt’s special occasion is always tomatoes
Pork belly post is coming soon, hopefully this weekend.
