My talented and beautiful wife, Danika

September 5, 2008

So WhiteonRiceCouple got me thinking (bloody hell, can I ever do a post without mentioning them?). I have a ridiculously talented and completely gorgeous wife, and I have never really talked about her on my blog. That strikes me as a little rude to be honest, so here.. I am fixing that. I might be many things, but I don’t reckon I am rude.

Danika. We met whilst working in the film industry, and hit it off rather fast. After leaving that rat race in search of another rat race, she managed to convince me to move to Seattle. She wanted to be closer to her parents, and I wanted to be closer to her. That was one of the easiest decisions I ever had to make! We have been married 4 years now, and we work together. Yep, that is right folks, we work and live together. In fact, we share the same office – and sit about as far apart as the camera is from her in the picture above. You know what? We love it. Call us odd, but it just works for us. We are so ridiculously cute, people at work call us “Mattika”.. feel free to puke now if you wish.

We both share a love of food. Not just any food, but clean, simple, local, natural, properly raised food. YUM. Her food knowledge is actually pretty crazy. She is the one that tells me what vitamins and minerals are in what – what is high in antioxidants, and so on. And tells me rather passionately does she.

But wait.. as with all good stories, there is more. She is an artist. Not just any artist, but a fudging good classical figure artist. You know the type – that sits down with a pencil and paper and makes it look so sodding easy you figure you can easily do it – only to end up looking rather stupid for thinking so. Even though I see her working away at her drawings, each one still blows me away. She has this relentless passion to always push forward, improve with every drawing, and to try new things. A passion like that is really honestly incredibly motivating – it helps me try and do the same with cooking.

She gets even more sickeningly good though. Her knowledge of art history is just darn annoyingly comprehensive. Who the heck needs a tour guide around the Louvre – I have my Danika. Little charming facts about artists just spill from her mouth, with great passion – not just who drew what, but information about their lives. Fascinating doesn’t even begin to describe it.

(before you ask, that isn’t me above.. It is a middle aged bald bloke with a pot belly named Randy).

Opps.. Did I mention she was the sexiest woman alive? Nope, I guess not. Well, she is. I’m a very, very lucky bloke.

“Mattika” – that’s adorable, and totally explains your URL. 🙂

You two were so obviously made for each other… in the few hours that I got to know you both at the WoRC party, it became so clear that you are so perfect for each other… I can’t imagine one of you without the other. A match made in heaven.

If you don’t mind, I’ll be stealing this idea of yours… I just realized that in the two years that Sushi Day has been around, I’ve barely written anything about Son. I shall definitely have to remedy that soon!

My first year of college we had to take a 6 hour class of life drawing. Man did it suck. It sucked because I was so bad at it. But if I was good, like your wife, then I would have been a much happier camper.

When Matt said he wanted to do a post about me I thought how sweet but “good night!” I didn’t expect all this. He is the most amazing husband and best friend anyone could have!! I am by far the lucky one! And he is a FABULOUS cook, BONUS!! But you have all seen his gorgeous photographs, so you know that. Matt even sits for me when I want to do some drawing, but I don’t know if he will ever share those 🙂
Thank you for your amazing comments. You are all way to kind!!!

Lovely post Matt. It’s nice to hear a little more about your better half. I look forward to meeting her!

Hi Matt – I was going to leave a note on your roast pork post which looks fantastic, but couldn’t help stopping here as it is so lovely! Danika’s drawings are stunningly beautiful, you are such a talented team! I don’t think my British husband (who happens to have the same name as you) is as sweet as you, but don’t tell him I said that! Look forward to reading more of your inspiring posts.
